One of the main areas of disagreement Mr. Bee and I have is over the laundry – he wants to send it out, I want to do it myself. In our old apartment, we had a laundry room in the building so it made sense to do it ourselves. But it was so time consuming Mr. Bee still wanted to send it out.
Now our walk-up doesn’t have a laundry room so we sent our laundry out for the first time last week. There’s a laundromat half a block away where you can do your laundry yourself or have them do it for you.

Anyway we picked up our laundry and there was a sweatshirt in there that wasn’t ours! We did 3 loads worth… I wouldn’t even notice if something of ours was missing. Plus the towels were crunchy – not nearly as soft as when I do them. It costs $1 pound with a minimum of 8 pounds, an additional $2.50 if you want your loads separated. Is that a fair price? I have no idea.
Do you send your laundry out? Having your own laundry machines is such a luxury.

sending it out seems like a luxury to me! But I’m not in NY. We have space here!
nope. i don’t trust those commercial washers and dryers.
besides, nothing beats the smell of fresh clean clothes right out of the dryer. yeah, i’m sick.
i don’t think i could send my laundry out. i don’t like the thought of someone else touching my clothes. but that’s just me.
i send mine out… but i’m VERY ocd about it.. so i asked for my clothes to be folded a specific way and also asked that they use extra fabric softener. of course this only works b/c it’s my parent’s laundromat. =)
but yea, that price seems about right.
yuck! i would never send it out because i like to monitor how much detergent and fabric softener goes in. since i need to move out for school in aug, i made it a point to find an apartment/house with the machines supplied. i can’t imagine having other people do my laundry, except for suits and wool/delicate items (dry cleaning). i’m always afraid that they’ll accidently mix other people’s clothing with mine (eww.. other people’s underwear). and omg, having other people do my laundry is pricey!
hehe. send dress shirts and slacks to be done, and wash tshirts, underwear, and towels yourself.
i’d prefer to do it myself. maybe i’m a bit anal/germaphobe. plus i prefer my own detergent over the ones that they might use. but i personally don’t like people seeing or touching my personal items. like undies for example. the other thing is… they usually put on gloves that they’ve used to touch other people’s laundry i’m pretty sure they don’t switch gloves between clean and dirty laundry. so the same gloves will be touching your clean laundry again after it touched your original dirty laundry and other people’s! AHHHHHHHHH! just the thought of that is going to kill me. ok maybe i’m a bit psychotic… and maybe not all the laundromats use the same gloves and your laundromat might be cleaner. but you never know…especially when you’re not there watching them do it.
i’m lucky, my building has a huge laundry room with big machines and it’s really cheap (75 cents per load for the wash, 25 cents for every 20 minutes in the dryer). i don’t think i could ever send my laundry out. the thought of some stranger handling my unmentionables is so creepy…
ah the good ol fluff and fold.. i guess its not such a big problem here in socal… i’d be grossed out if i got someone elses penties~
my boyfriend and i had the same disagreement. he kept nagging me about just dropping it off, but i am very anal about how my clothes and towels are folded, the detergent, and i like to take my clothes out of the dryer as soon as they’re dry. and laundry is like therapy for me. ocd people, unite!
a few months ago, i was down to my ugly granny panties and we had plans all weekend so we had to drop everything off. i was very pleasantly surprised when we got everything back – nicely folded(although i had to refold my towels), towels were soft, everything was clean and smelled nice. i think they charge about $.60/pound. it’s in brooklyn though, which probably explains why it’s cheap.
I never heard of sending laundry out. I can understand certain clothes that NEED to be dry cleaned…. but I would prefer washing my own bbance and other undergarnments.
theres a huge landromat by my apt in queens… we pay $0.60 a pound, 10 lb minimum for $6.00 but they have a gazillion brand new machines so no matter how much i bring down to do, if i do it myself theres never any waiting for a machine. but, the folding… sigh.
i remmeber one time we had $90 worth of laundry done… i dont even know how many pounds that is but it grossed me out.
it’s probably more common in ny to have to send laundry out, but we have a washer dry in our apt. in cali, i lived in apts where they had a laundry room and it wasn’t too inconvenient. but having one in the unit definitely helps!
i do my own at home. i used to take it out to do at a laundromat when i didn’t have a machine. i’m like pk…i love the smell when it comes out of the dryer warm.
and it only costs $0.80/lb here, 4lb min.
I had to laugh at lafoolio’s comment. We have our own laundry machine in our apt (one of the benefits of not living in NY). Even if we didn’t though, I’d prefer to do the laundry myself. I can’t believe you got someone else’s sweatshirt. That’s a good enough reason right there to wash your own clothes.
I always do my own laundry. The thought of sending it out never occurred to me because I think it’s cheaper to do it yourself (don’t have to pay for their labor). Plus you know no one else will touch your clothes or steal them!
i dont think i can trust someone else to do my laundry. what if some things got mixed up/lost?? i would be furious!! maybe you guys can just buy a washer/dryer and put them inside your apt? but i have a feeling that your apt doesn’t accomodate them. if thats the case, i really suggest you do them yourself because what if clothes went missing and you had other peoples clothes mixed up w/yours? that would be so annoying!!
it MUST be a NY thing
i would have no idea on what is WORTH it.
i’ve always had it sent out and so has the fiance. i think it’s a nyc thing cause my cali friends think it’s really odd. i’ve just found it saves so much time and price wise, it’s almost the same. if i actually had my own washer/dryer in my apt, i’d do it myself.. but since i don’t, i luv dropping it off with my doorman in the morning and coming home to perfectly folded clean laundry the same day.
if u don’t like how the current place does it, try other places. i had to try a couple places before finding one i really liked.
in the last two apts in nyc i’ve had a laundry/dryer in my apt… it was the best! i’ve only done laundry twice in hartford in 2 years b/c i had always brought it back with me. but now, must do it downstairs and i’m so lazy. but wouldn’t sent out b/c too expensive plus i use fragrance free, dye free, blah blah detergent b/c of ezcema and stuff.
Totally not fair! I would much rather do the work myself and save the money for that adorable mug in your next post.
If you have to go to a laundromat, then take a book along.
i think do it yourself is much better!!
i only sent it out when i lived in NYC and i got really busy. in used to think WTF, how lazy, but it does save time. all u gotta do is find a good place.
still tho, unless i have no time, i prefer doing it myself. the thought of someone touching my unmentionables is gross. plus i like my own laundry products.
i really really REALLY hate folding tho!
i stayed in Ny for one summer and i sent it out a few times but I too got some clothes that didn’t belong to me (and probably lost some clothes too). I think its good for towels and sheets. But for most of my clothes I say do it yourself b/c I don’t like to put a lot of my clothes in the dryer (they shrink and fade), so i stopped sending it in for clothes I like to hang dry.
So if you wanted it separated, and had 8 lbs, that would be $10.50 for washing, drying and folding? That’s so cheap.
I like doing my own laundry b/c I don’t like ppl going through my panties.
i only send out towels and bedding. and it’s 60cents/lb for me.
dude, i was exactly like you. he finally convinced me to send it out. we did. i opened the fresh bag of laundry and it smelled sooooooooooo good. we’ve been sending it out ever since.
I live in Philly and we recently sent out our laundry. For $1.25 a lb, it didn’t sound so bad. We figured we had about 15 lbs of laundry. Oops. Turned out we had closer to 50 lbs! So the total came out to $42 and change- with the 5 lb discount!!! If I was rich, maybe, but I’m not, so I guess I’ll just have to do it on my own. Or have my bf do it.
