  • Update: I poured the baking soda/vinegar down our bathtub, kitchen sink, and toilet.  Here’s a video of the reaction on my kitchen sink…  ooo exciting!

The verdict: My bathtub is draining a lot better, but still not perfectly.  There’s probably a nest of my hair stuck in down there.  It worked great on the kitchen sink though, so I will continue to do it regularly.

I saw a blog on apartmenttherapy about unclogging your drains with baking soda and vinegar.

    1. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain

    2. Follow with 1 cup of hot white vinegar heated in microwave

    3. Wait 5-10 minutes or until it stops bubbling and wash with boiling water

This is environmentally safe and inexpensive!  Our bathtub has been draining really slowly lately, probably because of the massive amounts of hair I shed.  I’m gonna try this today on our bathtub and kitchen sink, and I’ll let you know how it works!

  • i don’t think it’s going to dissolve hair, just soap scum.  i think it’s more for kitchen sinks that get clogged with oils and fats.

  • let me know if it works since i need to drain our tub too~

  • if only we knew this before we poured drano down the shower drain just last week! we’re gonna do this now.

  • this is why i have to live in a building with maintenance people.  =P one of them just came up last week to snake the bathtub drain because of the massive amounts of hair that i shed too.

  • It’s a great concotion for cleaning, but I don’t think it’ll work for hair.  Baking soda is great for cleaning almost anything.

  • ooh, that would be very helpful.

  • did it work?

  • this is just soccer mom training…good practice when u have to make that first science fair paper mache volcano…..

  • i’ll let my mom know and we’ll try it w/the kitchen sink! i saw your clip and it’s so funny when you actually hear it fizzing, like it’s getting the job done.  what a good home remedy!

  • oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh

  • i tried it on my bathroom sink and it helped. i also poured 1/2 bottle of hydrogen peroxide afterward and it cleaned up the rest. drains great.

  • wow! thanks for the tip!

  • dude, I use to do that mix in Chem class, never knew it cleaned stuff like that!!! scary.

  • oh..kboy75 mentioned it already.. hydrogen peroxide works to remove trapped hair and oil.. just pour it straightin the drain then let sit for an hour..then flush with water

  • what an awesome idea~! thank you.. I’m going to try it as soon as I get home

  • Sounds like it’ll be something I’m going to try! Thanks!

  • I just read a mag article about cleaning with environmentally safe products… and this was one.. only they suggest boiling the two together before pouring it donw the drain.  Does it have a different effect?  Dunno.

  • HAHAHA! my mom was annoyed when i came home with a gallon jug of white vinegar and a huge box of baking soda from the wholesale club a while back. she became a HUGE fan when i showed her all the different uses for vinegar. i found this vinegar website. i love it!

  • how long did you nuke the vinegar for? and how much boiling water did you pour? I’m hoping to try this for my bathroom… :)

  • i wonder if it will eat away at the pipes?

  • The subject on whom you wrote today is just wonderful. I feel like I belong or I am a part or that character in the article. How do you come up with such ideas? If I was in your place, I wouldn’t have been able to do as well as you do. That’s why you are a writer and me not.
